摘要、提要註:
The cobweb spider Latrodectus hesperus (Western black widow) is a medically important species and a subject of research for novel biomimetic materials. In recent years it has also become a model organism for questions related to developmental biology and genetics. Latrodectus geometricus, a sister taxa of Latrodectus hesperus, is a non-native species that appears to be displacing the native L. hesperus. Little is known about the embryonic development of these species. In this work I describe and compare the embryonic development of L. hesperus and L. geometricus. A modified staging system that allows for easy identification of the major developmental stages in spiders, independent of genus and species has also been developed.
