摘要、提要註:
The plot and the subplot of Shakespeare's "King Lear" correspond to the female and male versions of a folktale called The Outcast Child, which is itself a variant of a Cinderella tale. By comparing the major structural elements of this folktale with King Lear, much can be learned about the plot choices Shakespeare made. Especially important is the fact that he gave the female version of The Outcast Child an unhappy ending: in killing Cordelia he killed Cinderella. By contrast, Edgar's story follows the structure of the folktale to the end, with the Outcast Child triumphant.
