摘要、提要註:
The goals of this dissertation are twofold, namely to provide an in-depth syntactic discussion of two widely used strategies for expressing unequal comparison in Sranan Tongo, and to explore how these strategies compare to the superstrate and substrate strategies they are ostensibly modeled after. The comparatives in question are specifically what Stassen (1985) terms "particle comparatives" and "EXCEED comparatives," which are also recognized as primary comparative strategies of the Germanic superstrate and Gbe substrate languages respectively.

The dissertation can thus be divided conceptually into two parts. The first part, consisting of Chapters 2 and 3, is an empirical investigation of the distributions and syntactic properties of the two comparative strategies, as well as the component elements associated with them, most notably the comparative morphemes and gradable predicates. In Chapter 2 I argue that Sranan gradable predicates are categorially underspecified for verbhood or adjectivehood and that the subsequent multifunctionality has syntactic consequences which are visible in particle comparative constructions, evidenced by the positions occupied by adverbs, copula use, and measure phrases. In Chapter 3 I argue against a serial verb construction analysis of the Sranan EXCEED comparative; I instead propose an adjunct small-clause analysis which better accounts for some behaviors observed in these comparative constructions which are otherwise puzzling, specifically an incompatibility with expressions of nominal comparison and NP movement under argument focus.

Chapters 4 and 5 comprise the second part, which considers the Sranan comparative strategies against the backdrop of the respective comparatives in the source languages. These discussions center around the questions of whether creole structures are identical to their counterparts in the donor languages, and what the resulting implications are for theories of creolization. In Chapter 4 I argue on the basis of the properties of the Sranan comparatives presented in Chapters 2 and 3 that neither Sranan comparative strategy can be viewed as an exact replica of the source structures. I propose that the Sranan data instead supports Aboh's (2006) hypothesis that syntactic and semantic features from source languages are subject to hybridization in the emergent creole languages. Finally, in Chapter 5 I submit that the data from these comparative strategies support the position that Sranan evolved by means of gradual restructuring of the English superstrate and cannot be attributed to relexification processes.
