Economic regionalism has taken a different path in East Asia. In contrast to the government-engineered and highly institutionalized regionalism of Europe and North America, economic regionalismin East Asia started as an autonomous and uninstitutionalized process of rapidly risingintraregionaltrade and FDI flows, driven by market forces and economic imperatives. Over time, this process gradually involved a new dimension of increasingly institutionalized regional economic cooperation between states in the region, particularly in the wake of the 1997&
