The contributors provide a comparative analysis of the modern economic development of Japan and China that are often explained in frameworks of East Asian developmentalism, varies of capitalism or world economic system, and explore their broader significances for the rise and global expansion of modern economy. The impressive, and recent, economic development of Japan and China, has led many to seek understanding beyond the theories of the developmental state, varieties of capitalism, and the world economic system. Leading global scholars on Japan and China provide a comparative analysis of the patterns of modern economic development, their political economy, and the historical and global context of their economic development. Japanese and Chinese experiences of modern economic development are larger than individual theories can make sense of. The experiences of China and Japan point to the fundamental challenge nations have faced in organizing economic and political activities under modern conditions.
