摘要、提要註: This interdisciplinary project describes the contours of a lyric late modernism as reflected in the poetry and opera of Gertrude Stein, W.H. Auden, and Langston Hughes. After high modernism begins to fade, these poets develop a lyric mode that reclaims elements of an organic voice as they are confronted with a genre--opera--that models organic unity. This late modernist lyricism coincides with the rise of the New Criticism, which values the unifying presence of the speaker figure. Though this late modernist lyricism looks slightly different for each poet, these poets' common turns to opera suggest that the organic voice as a marker of interiority, subjectivity, and embodiment comes to represent a salient and pervasive feature of late modernism. Stein explores a heightened aural dimension with defined speakers in Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All amidst her otherwise visual, indeterminate writing; Hughes's interrogation of assumptions of whiteness behind "universal" voices culminates in Troubled Island ; and Auden is drawn to the manifestation of the embodied voice in The Rake's Progress and his later collections after reconciling his homosexuality with his Christian beliefs.
