摘要、提要註: The first woman anyone encounters in life is his or her mother, and the power of that relationship, and all that goes with it, affects the way in which men and women interact with one another. Even in our modern society, where the responsibilities of childrearing are more evenly divided between mothers and fathers, women often are seen as the primary nurturers of children. This idea of women as nurturers then carries on into other relationships in women's lives. In three of Shakespeare's most powerful tragedies, Macbeth, Hamlet, and King Lear, the tragic heroes seek maternal care and guidance from the female characters, pushing those women to fulfill what they need. In all three cases, the women are resistant to the mother role. Using historical, feminist and Freudian criticism, I identify the societal views of mothers in Shakespeare's day and in modern culture, and I then assert that the three tragic heroes look to the female characters for maternal guidance, only to be disappointed. Those disappointed expectations in the women who are supposed to represent the maternal ideal assist in the demise of the tragic heroes.
