摘要、提要註: In a conflict setting, such as Germany and Italy during the Second World War, the political neutrality of the interpreter can become a problematic issue. Censorship could then be applied by the interpreter himself in order to stop, manipulate and control the communication between opposed parties. By choosing to communicate or not the information he held, the interpreter could influence the outcome of certain political and social events. In the light of the memoirs of Eugen Dollmann, who interpreted for Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini among others, the phenomena of censorship in interpretation will hereby be analyzed. This analysis will be based on the structural censorship theory developed by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1982). The influence of the in-between identity (Sibony, 1991) often associated with interpreters and translators will also be used to study the actions of the interpreter.
