摘要、提要註:
This study explored the mediating influence of personal agency on the relationship between internal relational dialectic contradictions and relationship satisfaction for female multi-generational caretakers. Female multi-generational caretakers, women who care for children and an older adult simultaneously, experience internal relational dialectic contradictions, which may influence their satisfaction with the relationships they have with their children and their care-recipient. The study uses relational dialectics theory by using internal relational dialectics as a dependent variable through the development, and validation, of a quantitative scale measuring internal relational dialectic contradictions.

Prior to data analysis, data for this study were used to validate a new measure of internal relational dialectic contradictions, the IRDC. Using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the three three-sub scales of the IRDC were validated, autonomy-connection, predictability-unpredictability, and openness-closedness. Following these tests, the relationships between self-efficacy, internal relational dialectic contradictions, satisfaction with the patient relationship, and satisfaction with the child relationship were tested.

Results of these tests were obtained using path modeling. While the original model proposed for this study was not supported, post-hoc tests revealed autonomy-connection mediates the relationship between self-reliance and patient satisfaction. Further, a positive relationship was found between openness-closedness and satisfaction with patient relationship, as well as another positive relationship between satisfaction with patient relationship and satisfaction with child relationship.

Implications of this study focus on two areas: the validation of the IRDC to study internal relational dialectic contradictions in a new way, and as knowledge of how communication may influence the relationships important for a female multi-generational caretaker. The ability to study internal relational dialectic contradictions in a new way encourages growth of relational dialectic theory in a new direction. Additionally, understanding the role of communication within a caretaking relationship provides other disciplines further proof of the importance of communication. Limitations and directions for future research emerging from this study are also presented.
