摘要、提要註:
This qualitative study describes urban African American namegiver accounts of how and why they bestow one-of-a-kind names. Grounded in historical, sociological, psychological, anthropological, linguistic and economic literatures, this inquiry presents namegivers' perceptions of how these names influence the life chances of unique name recipients. African American names and naming practices are too often represented superficially; this inquiry examines recent African American names from the viewpoint of namegivers themselves. Data were gathered from 24 in-depth interviews with primary namegivers. Findings show how African American naming conventions are co-constructed and reflect both resistance to the dominant culture and to cultural conformity.
