摘要、提要註:
The use of virtual reality exposure therapy offers advantages over traditional therapies, however little research has been conducted to examine individual differences in how users interact with virtual reality programs. This study examined how the factors of age, gender, and level of computer familiarity (measured using the CAAFI), interact to influence the level of presence that participants experience during virtual reality activities. The study included 50 participants, aged 18-80, in a fire drill evacuation simulation using a z800 head mounted display. The construct "presence" was measured using both skin conductance level and self report on the Slater-Usoh-Steed Questionnaire. A significant effect was found for age on SCL, however only when age was organized into two cohorts, 0-23 and 24+, post hoc. A significant effect was found for the interaction of age and gender on SCL. A large effect was found for CAAFI scores and for the CAAFI by gender interaction, though the effect was not significant at the .05 level. The two assessments of presence were weakly correlated, suggesting that these two assessments measure different constructs.
