摘要、提要註: The social functions of art are often misunderstood and/or neglected in k--12 art classrooms. I conducted a qualitative, ethnographic case study of the people, processes, and products involved in building parade floats in Ontonagon, Michigan to understand how this public folk art form contributes to group cohesion among three groups of float builders and how the parade entries functioned within the social milieu of a rural community. The investigation contributes new documentation to the study of folklore and visual/material culture in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and offers important lessons for educators interested in furthering Community-Based Art Education practices in k--12 settings. My primary findings relate to the expression of nested social identities through festival arts, float builders' folklore, and three areas of interest to art educators, namely, the social roots of artistic motivation, the nature of collaborative art production (group dynamics in art making), and local culture in the classroom.
