摘要、提要註:	It can be argued that strenuous life events, like a cancer diagnosis, are sites of transition and struggle that are constructed in communicative form and, as such, are spaces where communal coping may be identified and understood as a means of how patients and families may deal with cancer collectively. This study is a first step in a much-needed research agenda and is an attempt to understand how families may collectively cope with cancer, specifically breast cancer, by examining communal coping as a dialectical process. The purpose of this study is to contribute to a theoretical understanding of communal coping enacted by families who have faced breast cancer in a manner that appreciates its complexity within family communication.

520 $a Employing a theoretical framework of relational dialectics theory (RDT), I analyzed talk following 64 interviews with family members who have coped with breast cancer. A two-part complementary methodological flow of data collection and data analysis was conducted. Data were analyzed first for significant turning points and second for discursive struggle and competition via a contrapuntal analysis.
520 $a The results of the analysis revealed that communal coping was not highly prevalent in family member constructions of a breast cancer experience. Individual coping by female breast cancer survivors was complemented by displays of traditional social support offered by spouses and other family members. Implications of these results as well as limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
