The contributors, experts in a variety of historical and literary fields, focus on issues of identity,adaptation and memory among Jacobites in Scotland, Ireland, England, France and other parts of Europe. Special attention is given to the reworking of Jacobite history in the three British kingdoms, by both popular and scholarly writers. Jacobite activity is examined on the local, national and international levels. From rioters in Edinburgh to partisan scribblers in London, from businessmen in Bordeaux to courtiers in Rome, Jacobite Europe presents a diverse and dynamic cultural world. The wide-ranging contributions in this book examine Jacobitism not just as anideology of opposition, but as an integral aspect of European politics, culture and society in the century after 1688.
