摘要、提要註: Since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War, the Middle East, unlike any other region of the world, has beenafflicted with frequent military conflict, inter-statehostility and civil wars. This book investigates the role and the impacts of the military and military regimes in the Middle East. It examines the role of the armies in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Egypt and Israel and analyses the economic growth in the countries during 1970-2006, highlighting theirmain problems. The book argues that one of the main causes of the slowand stagnated economic development in the region is high military expenditure perpetuated by strong grips of armies on the politicsof the region. It also maintains that strong armies have systematically hinderedthe development ofcivil and modern political institutions in the region. The book is designed to contribute and supportpolitical dialogue and democratic solution for the main conflicts in the region.
