摘要、提要註:	Rather than using a ranking system based on occupational prestige toexplain social stratification through class, this book shows how classformation can be explained through political events anddecisions. Using detailed analyses of Russia, France, the United States and England, Michael Burrageclaims that class formation is shaped by the habitual relationship between the state and civil society, and that contrary to general opinion, is undermined by free markets. Using George Orwell's famous description of England as class-ridden as the foundation for his argument, Michael Burrage revealswhether this still holds true today, and provides provocative and original theory on how and why classes haveemerged, or failed to emerge.
