摘要、提要註: World Cinema's 'Dialogues' with Hollywood looks at the way Hollywoodhas interacted with a range of national and transnational cinemas. It considers how Hollywood has acted both as a magnate forthe talent of the world's cinema and as a critical foil for filmmakers questioning theimperial powerof the US. From German Expressionism at the start of the twentieth century to East Asian martial arts movies at the start of the twenty-first, the contributors show the profound impact that Hollywoodhas had upon the history of the medium. At times it seems that if there is a 'dialogue' to be identified it is one where the US majors havedone all the talking. However, as this volume highlights throughout, this is far from the case. Indeed, it is impossible to understand the development of mainstream North American cinema without understanding theeconomic, aesthetic and political influence on it from the rest of theworld.
