摘要、提要註:
Baudrillard's statement, that "when the real is no longer what it was, nostalgia assumes its full meaning," is the starting point for this study, which examines the nostalgic impulse as it manifests in the behavior of a very specific group of consumers and collectors...those who buy, sell, and collect vintage foundation wear, or girdles.

The study begins with an abbreviated history of the girdle in the United States, as it is necessary to first understand the attitudes that shaped the idea of the girdle as a cultural artifact. Through tracing this history, the study shows how the girdle served as a powerful tool in the construction of female identity, particularly in the post-WWII era.

Using the on-line auction site eBay as representative of the postmodern marketplace, the study examines buyer behavior as it relates to these items of purely nostalgic value. Using Marx's construction of commodity fetishism, Baudrillard's precession of simulacra and Hutcheon's theory of the ironic as it manifests itself through nostalgia, I analyze the behavior of buyers and collectors to explore the nostalgic impulse as a symptom of the postmodern condition.

The study used the research techniques that have come to be known as "virtual ethnography," conducting research and interviews through a variety of electronic media including discussion boards, chat rooms, email, and instant messaging. To establish a context for the study, I frequented web sites that were designed and maintained by individuals who bought, sold, and collected vintage girdles.

The results of the study suggest that, though there may be several factors involved in the buying and collecting of vintage girdles, the strongest and most frequently mentioned of these can be traced to the nostalgic impulse. While at times the ironic dimension of these objects is in play, it still rests on a foundation of, as Baudrillard might say, a postmodern resurrection of the figurative where the object and substance have disappeared or, more simply, nostalgia for the real.
