摘要、提要註: Based on expectations that messages create effects, this study examines cognitive, affective, and social outcomes of parentally-initiated strategic embarrassment. Through the lens of Self-Discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987), it was proposed that the social transgression of intentional embarrassment activates a comparative evaluation with one's self-guides which creates internal discrepancy (an actual:ideal or actual:ought discrepancy), leading to various outcomes which motivate the use of coping mechanisms. Consequences of the violation, as well as the objective and/or selected responses, impends possible risks to self (psychologically and emotionally) and to social relationships (specifically, parent/child). Antecedents influencing message production (perceived parenting style and perceived gender), were explored, along with potential message reception moderators (level of embarrassability, interpersonal trust, face-threat sensitivity, appraisals, and self-esteem). Self-report data was quantitatively analyzed.
