摘要、提要註:
Advanced information and interaction technology has introduced new forms and meanings of computer applications beyond desktop computers---from varying types of digital devices to interactive fashion and architecture. This dissertation is motivated by the notion of digital technology as a design material, and aims to investigate its aesthetic potential in the context of interaction design and HCI research. The main assumption of my dissertation is that current analytic design and research approaches in HCI are not appropriate to investigate aesthetic aspects of interaction due to their priority on functionality. In this vein I suggest form and materiality as an alternative lens to view design and use of interactive computer applications. As a first step I conceptualize form and materiality based on the perspectives from relevant disciplines including traditional design, arts, craft, material culture and philosophy of technology. The conceptualization emphasizes the process of making, personal meanings, and socio-cultural values of digital artifacts, constructing new methodology for exploratory studies on form and materiality. Based on the conceptual framework, six exploratory studies are conducted to expand the understanding of form and materiality into the digital domain: (1) Food Watch, (2) Ambient Plant Pot, (3) Soft-Spiky Mouse, (4) Material Probe, (5) Deep Narratives, and (6) Meaning Maps. All the study processes and results are discussed, leading to epistemological and methodological implications for a new approach in interaction design and HCI research. In the end I introduce a proposal for form-driven interaction design research as a new approach to HCI with its focus on form aspects of interactive artifacts based on the reflection on my studies.
